Refuge Day & Ceremony
Become Your Own Protector
with Gen Kelsang Rinzin
Saturday, May 11, 10:00am ā 4:00pm (with breaks)
Buddhaās teachings are universal. In this diverse and turbulent world, his insightful and compassionate advice holds the possibility of uniting everyone, regardless of background, race, or religion. Finding refuge in these teachings, the Dharma, we gradually build stable peace in our mind by increasing our positive minds and freeing ourselves from delusions. Through this we come to experience actual inner protection from all pain and problems, as well as the ability to protect others.
During this event, Gen Rinzin will explain and guide us in the inspiring mind of refuge in the Three Jewels. Dharma is like the medicine, Buddha the doctor, and Sangha the skillful nurses ā together they help us finally to heal our minds and in that way heals our world.
We also have the opportunity to go for refuge formally in a beautiful ancient ceremony consisting of prayers and guided meditations through which we enter the Buddhist path. And if you are simply seeking wisdom and inspiration on your spiritual journey, this teaching and ceremony will bring the blessings and protection of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha into your quest.
Everyone is welcome!

Refuge Retreat
Monday to Thursday, May 13 - 16, 2024
When we have refuge in the Three Jewels, we can remain calm, peaceful, and happy no matter what.
Everyone is seeking refuge - in money, food, distraction, but these leave us still feeling nervous and unsure - they aren't real refuge. As we navigate across the ocean of samsara's troubles, we can find real protection in Buddha, his teachings (Dharma), and his followers (Sangha). The Dharma Jewel is like a boat, the Buddha Jewel is like a skillful navigator and the Sangha Jewel is like the dependable crew that will help us reach the shore of permanent freedom from pain and problems.
On this retreat, we will deepen our practice and experience of Buddhist refuge, especially gaining inner realizations of the the path to enlightenment. Gen Rinzin will guide us to meditate on the stages of developing refuge. Each session includes time for:
- For silent study on refuge (books provided),
- Four stages of meditating on refuge
- Meditation on the actual refuge - the realizations of the stages of the path to enlightenment
Sessions are about 90 minutes long, and include prayers.
Note: We will be locking the door promptly at session time. Please give yourself time to find parking.

Body, Mind, Self - Whidbey Island Day Retreat
A day to let go of ordinary, limiting ideas about who we really are, and find the innate purity and flexibility within us all.
Normally we grasp at our self as a limited person, and because of this we frequently become anxious or jealous or angry. Luckily, this limited self is a fiction.
In this day-retreat, American Buddhist monk Gen Kelsang Rinzin will guide us away from limiting conceptions of self toward viewing our pure nature and seeing purity around us. This will take place on Whidbey Island in the beautiful, restful grounds of Baby Island Saratoga Club. Everyone welcome!
